About Us

Before the ceremony - we two

Embraced by Earth is a young organization focused on land conservation and returning to the earth for our final embrace. It is what we are called to bring into the world. Not an ice cream shop or a brewery, even though those endeavors might be more fun. We are Alan Binnie and Kristine Bentz, two people who love being in relationship with wild land, wish to be buried naturally ourselves when the time comes and aspire to give back to our community here in Tucson, Arizona and the Portal/Rodeo area near the Chiricahua Mountains. Between us, we share nearly 40 combined years of professional experience in the areas of business and non-profit management, land conservation efforts and work in dying and death care.

Alan is a retired biochemist who is a native Tucsonan and has camped, hiked and explored in the Sonoran Desert landscape all his life. After he dies, he wants his shroud to be his sleeping bag. Kristine is presently a hospice spiritual counselor and interfaith minister, who sees an opportunity for people who want to be buried near trees and naturally, to actualize their final wish. She is keen on being buried in her purple cowgirl boots and a felted wool shroud, but people are already fighting over the boots.
